HK sees Internet of Things as the core to the development of digital economy

Wong King Man, Assistant Government Chief Information Officer gave a speech on IoT in China.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China just released the “14th Five-Year Plan for Information and Communication Industry Development” last month. Among them, five key tasks are proposed, including the full deployment of new-generation communication network infrastructure such as 5G, mobile Internet of Things, and satellite communication networks. The purpose is to build a new-generation communication network based on data and computing facilities.

Facility is a breakthrough new digital infrastructure system. It can be seen that the Internet of Things is indeed the core element of the development of the digital economy.

In recent years, the national Internet of Things industry has developed rapidly. According to the “2020-2021 China Internet of Things Development Annual Report” released by China Economic Information Service, the scale of China’s Internet of Things industry exceeded 1.7 trillion yuan, an increase of 13.3% over last year. Another research institution, International Data Corporation (IDC), also predicts that by 2025, China’s IoT market will reach US$300 billion, accounting for about 26% of the world’s same period, ranking first in the world.

The application of IoT technology in Hong Kong is also very extensive. For example, using the Internet of Things and bio-imaging technology to manufacture electrode strips, perform real-time image scanning of the patient’s body, and issue medical warnings as soon as possible to protect the health of the patient; there are also companies that use the Internet of Things and a number of new technologies to develop a fully automatic parking system to realize intelligent parking lots There is also a plan to use a sensor that can sense 16 kinds of physical data, combined with artificial intelligence to sense the living habits and activities of the elderly, so as to understand and care for the needs of the elderly. These innovative products have achieved good results in this year’s “Hong Kong ICT Awards”.

The Hong Kong SAR government is also actively adopting IoT technology to improve public services. We started to develop “Government Internet of Things” as early as 2019, using different types of remote sensors to remotely monitor and control the operation of electromechanical equipment, including air conditioning systems in government buildings, filter pump systems in swimming pools, and public transport interchanges ventilation systems, irrigation pumps for sports fields, etc., to support smart city management.

Currently, we are discussing the application of “Government IoT” to “smart toilets” to improve the hygiene of public toilets. We also plan to use the technology to track the location of hikers in remote areas. When these people lose contact, the rescue team can track the location based on the “Government Internet of Things” equipment worn by the hikers to speed up search and rescue work.

With the support of national policies such as the “14th Five-Year Plan” and the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan”, the ties between Hong Kong and the Mainland will be closer. I hope that the two places can continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation in the Internet of Things technology, make full use of the Internet, big data and artificial intelligence and other technologies to promote the deep integration of the Internet of Things and the development of the real economy, and contribute to the development of the country’s digital economy.
